Adult Swim swoops in to save Tuca & Bertie for second season

Tuca & Bertie, canceled all too soon by Netflix after just one season, is getting a second chance. Adult Swim has picked up the adult animated series from BoJack Horseman co-producer Lisa Hanawalt for a 10-episode second season, which is expected to hit the network sometime in 2021.

The main voice cast — Tiffany Haddish as the toucan Tuca, Ali Wong as the thrush Bertie, and Steven Yeun as Speckle the robin — will return for season 2. Adult Swim says it has “the option for more” episodes after the second season.

“I’ve been a fan of Adult Swim shows since my teens, so I’m thrilled to bring my beloved fowl to the party and be a new voice for a fresh decade of absurd, irreverent, yet heartwarming adult animation,” Hanawalt said in a news release.

Tuca & Bertie premiered on Netflix in May 2019 with a 10-episode season. In July, Hanawalt shared the news on Twitter that the show wasn’t being picked up for a second season at Netflix, lamenting that Tuca & Bertie was “everything I wanted it to be: beautiful, funny, fresh, loving, horny, weird, experimental, comforting, and deep,” adding that “none of this makes a difference to an algorithm, but it’s important to me and the way I want to continue making art in this world.”

The revival of Tuca & Bertie isn’t the first time a fan-favorite Netflix series has been picked up by another network. In 2019, Pop TV brought back One Day at a Time for a fourth season after it had been dropped by Netflix.
