MacGruber is getting a TV show and the plot sounds wild

Get ready for more throat-ripping.

NBCUniversal announced on Monday that the greatest action hero of our generation, MacGruber, will return once again for a Peacock original TV series. According to a news release, the new series will see Will Forte resume his role for eight half-hour episodes, though it’s unclear if it’ll involve sticking celery up his butt. Fans can only hope.

Forte debuted the MacGruber character in 2007 during his time on Saturday Night Live. The MacGyver spoof was such a hit that SNL mega-producer Lorne Michaels spun off the character into his own 2010 movie, directed by The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone. The movie was a box office failure, despite being the greatest comedy of all time. Shut your butt, America!

Plans for a MacGruber 2 have been percolating for years, with rumors that Netflix could be an obvious home. With the recent launch of Peacock, it was only logical for NBCUniversal to keep the property and the talent in house. Forte, Taccone, and John Solomon (The Last Man on Earth) have signed on to write the series, with Taccone directing all eight episodes. Here’s the official premise:

After rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber (Will Forte) is finally released. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must race against time to defeat the forces of evil — only to find that evil… may be lurking within.

With COVID-19 concerns restricting production around the world, it’s unclear when MacGruber may go into production.
