The Birds of Prey guide

In 2016, Suicide Squad grossed over $740 million worldwide. A sequel was obvious, yet difficult to imagine, as the movie had earned universally poor reviews and behind-the-scenes drama made any continuation in its current form a near impossibility.

Luckily, there was a silver lining: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The actress arrived to Suicide Squad embodying the slapstick anarchy of Quinn, who started as an actual cartoon character before jumping to the pages of DC Comics. She was seemingly born for the role, and even when Suicide Squad squeezed her into a battalion of half-baked villains, she shined.

So it’s no surprise that plans for a Suicide Squad 2 hit the backburner in favor of Harley Quinn’s own outing. While she’ll return for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad next year, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) gives the character room to breathe … and punch and kick and flip and blow things up. It also pairs her with formidable, female antiheroes — like Huntress, Black Canary, and the completely reimagined Cassandra Cain — that every comic book movie fan should know. Joker fans … adjust your expectations accordingly.

Birds of Prey is full of gleeful, bubblegum-popping, super-duper-R-rated choices and nods to the past. Let’s dive in.
