Updated Nintendo Switch with better battery life now in stores

Nintendo’s new revision of the original Nintendo Switch, the one that comes with improved battery life, is now available in stores. The updated system gives the Switch a longer-lasting battery for the same price ($299.99). If you’re in the market for a Switch upgrade, we’ll show you how to find one of the new ones.

Some stores, like GameStop and Best Buy, already have the new version of the Nintendo Switch in stock, but some retailers may still have some older stock. “Consumers should start seeing the new packaging on store shelves around mid-August, but that will vary by individual stores and locations,” Nintendo said in a statement to Polygon.

But here’s what you should be looking for:

This is the new packaging for the revised Nintendo Switch with the better battery. It features a bright red background.

The original Switch hardware comes in a box with a white/gray background (and a nicely manicured human hand), which can be seen below.

If you’re shopping online for the new Nintendo Switch, you’ll want to look for the model numbers that start with HAD: HADSKABAA for the model with the blue and red Joy-Con controllers, HADSKAAAA for the model with grey Joy-Con controllers. Older Nintendo Switch models start with the letters HAC.

Alternatively, the updated Switch with the better battery may go by the model number HAC-001(-01). The original Switch model number is simply HAC-001.

The new Switch should also have a serial number — visible on the bottom of the console itself — that starts with the letters XKW.

Many online retailers still show packaging artwork for the older Switch model, but retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and B&H have distinct listings for the new model of the Switch in their online stores. For now, you may want to verify in person which model you’re getting, or visit an online retailer with specific listings.
