Treyarch denies claims that Mark Lamia, Studio Chairman, is solely responsible for MTX in Black Ops 4

A Twitter account claiming to have “inside” information on the on-goings at Treyarch stated this week that Mark Lamia, current Chairman of the Studio, was exclusively responsible for the microtransaction system in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 with Activision “just overseeing” the process.

Treyarch’s Community Coordinator has responded on Reddit to this claim stating it’s completely false, and that Mark Lamia has actually shifted away from day-to-day operations from Treyarch since Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

He has been providing mentorship at Treyarch to the studio leadership team for the last few years. Treyarch says that decisions made in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are a “team decision” between Treyarch, Activision, and partner studios.

Here’s the full response:

It’s been a long week with a lot of active conversation… typically we don’t respond to rumors, but this claim is based on false information and is targeting an individual.

Mark Lamia transitioned away from day-to-day operations several years ago after the release of Black Ops 3. Mark is currently our chairman and provides advice/mentorship to studio leadership. He’s always been a great leader, and the team has loved working with him. Given the personal nature of the claims, it needs to be made clear that he’s not directing any game development or content plans, and these claims are, again, simply false.

Many team members have been working on Black Ops 4 and are committed to delivering great gaming experiences every day across Treyarch, Activision, and partner studios. No single person is solely responsible for decisions around design of the game – it’s always a team effort. It’s not only hurtful and unfair to target individuals based on misunderstandings about their roles on the team, but it’s also a slight to all the team members who are working hard on this game.

Let’s get back to focusing our community dialogue around the game and away from discussions about individuals. Constructive feedback about the game is always fair – targeting individual members of the team is not.

This marks the second time in the same week that some “leakers” online were providing false information on Treyarch. Earlier this week, leaks claimed that Jason Blundell was fired from Treyarch for certain reasons, but Activision sent a statement to CharlieIntel denying that rumor and stated Blundell continues to direct the Zombies experiences for Black Ops 4.

Ground War and Pandemic Modes coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout

Treyarch has shared on Reddit some updates on when fans can expect some modes to return to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode, alongside the debut of a new mode.

Ground War, which was introduced to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 with Operation Spectre Rising, brought a 50v50 LTM to the game for the very first time. Treyarch has now stated on Reddit that Ground War will return on Tuesday, July 30 on all platforms. There was no indication as to how long it will be the Featured Playlist for.

In addition, at the start of Operation Apocalypse Z, Treyarch revealed a brand new mode was coming to Blackout: a twist of Infected called Pandemic. Their blog post back in early July described the mode as:

This Operation’s upcoming limited-time mode is planned to feature a large-scale fight to survive enemies and zombies. Like Multiplayer’s Infected, when players are eliminated, they return as zombies looking to add more numbers to their horde. Infected players can respawn all the way up until the final Collapse, where the remaining squads must bunker down and outlast the Pandemic. The last squad of survivors will win.

In a Reddit comment responding to fan’s questions on the mode, Treyarch has stated that Pandemic mode will become available in Blackout in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in August with the launch of the second half of Operation Apocalypse Z, which should include a Contraband Stream in the Black Market.

New QA on the Aether Story with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies team released

Following the launch of Black Ops 4’s DLC3 ‘Alpha Omega’ Zombies experience, Activision has shared a Questions and Answers blog post with Craig Houston, Lead Writer, and the rest of the Zombies team at Treyarch.

Topics covered include the end of the Aether storyline, the team’s thoughts on Zombies growing into the massive success that it is today since its introduction in World at War, and more.

Activision Games Blog (AGB): As a team with some of Treyarch’s most veteran writers, how have you felt the Zombies franchise has grown from being a secret game mode in Call of Duty®: World at War to today? Did you ever imagine back then that you and the team would be deep into hiding easter eggs and building these worlds?

Zombies Team (ZT): We don’t think any of us could have imagined what it would turn into. We remember those first ‘baby steps’ – the meetings about how to introduce a narrative element with the intro video…? Even though Zombies has grown so much that it now has these huge – epic – cinematic intros, we honestly thought and stressed more about that Nacht intro than anyone will ever know….

AGB: What has Nuketown meant to the Treyarch Zombies team, ever since its debut in Multiplayer in the original Black Ops?

ZT: We’ve always loved Nuketown’s ability to have high engagement and chaos in such a small place – it’s still a favorite MP map – and the Zombies version was fun because we were able to start building our narrative on such an iconic map.

AGB: Following that question, was that the reason why Nuketown became the setting of Alpha Omega? Or does its in-game significance also play a role into coming back?

ZT: The real reason to go back to Nuketown in Alpha Omega is that it brings together several strands of the story – Ultimis, Primis, Broken Arrow – and in turn… Victis?

AGB: Are there any tie-ins to Alpha Omega from the original Zombies Nuketown from Black Ops II?

ZT: Well… There are some significant ‘cameos’ from characters that our fans may be familiar with… We’ve heard from some of these characters before, but others have never really had a chance to… Speak.

We’ll just leave it at that for now 🙂

AGB: Since this is Alpha Omega, a beginning and an end, can we expect anything in this map to be from World at War or the older Black Ops titles that will give players that nostalgic feel from their favorite maps?

ZT: This is a bit of a nostalgia hit for so many reasons. Besides the iconic location – and weapons like the Ray Gun MK II – the biggest one of all for many of us is that the ULTIMIS CREW from WAW and BO1 are back…

AGB: Are any classic wonder weapons like the Microwave Gun or the Ray Gun MKII that may make an appearance in this new experience? Or is there something new on the horizon?

ZT: Oops. I think I just spoiled that in my last answer. The Ray Gun MKII is indeed back – with some twists. Four times the fun!

AGB: For the operation itself, what other plans and features are there that will tie into Alpha Omega?

ZT: Zombies gets to spread across the whole game – outside of the restrictions of ‘story canon’ – so it’s really a chance to just have some fun with areas that we wouldn’t normally infect… After all, having fun is the most important thing, even for the undead.

AGB: Is this truly the end of this story? If so, how hard was it to put a bow on this epic legend and say goodbye to our favorite characters?

ZT: Honestly? We’re still processing it. We’re in the middle of writing some major stuff for our beloved characters and it’s… emotional. With the multi-verse established, there will always be other stories to imagine – but in terms of Primis, Ultimis and Victis – This IS the end of the line.

Bless them X.

AGB: Finally, we’re really looking forward to the next operation and what it holds… but we’re still wondering this: are there still Easter Eggs that have yet to be discovered within the Aether story? Even going as far back as World at War or the original Black Ops?

ZT: Yes.

Last Year’s Underdogs Now Have A Shot At This Year’s Call Of Duty Championship

Image: Activision (Call of Duty: Black Ops 4)

Colt “Havok” McLendon watched the 2018 Call of Duty World League Championship from home. This year, his team could go all the way to the finals.

“Before this year started, I told myself, ‘I’m going to do competitive all or nothing, or I’m going to be a streamer,” McLendon, a member of the team Gen.G Esports, told Dot Esports in an interview earlier this week. “I’m not going to try to do both again.’ Now, my only goal is to win an event. And I guess it’s the secret formula because it’s been a lot better.”

The release of Call of Duty: WWII turned out to be the kiss of death for the pro player, whose 2017-2018 season ended in disaster, including not even qualifying for the championship. His fortunes have rebounded in the era of Black Ops 4, starting with a respectable 7th-place finish at the Las Vegas Open last December before managing to qualify for the 2019 Pro League with his ragtag team of unknowns, Team Space, in January.

The team, which was immediately signed by Gen.G, has only continued to build up steam, finishing 7th at CWL Fort Worth in March, 5th at CWL London in May, and 2nd at CWL Anaheim in June. Earlier this month, Gen.G finished the Pro League 2019 season in 3rd.

Now they have a chance to become world champions, and potentially rake in millions between the Pro League Championship’s $1,250,000 prize pool this weekend and the World Championship’s $2,000,000 prize pool in August. It’s the kind of money that could make it all worth it for the team of six whose future remains uncertain, especially as the esport heads into 2020 with not only a new game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but also an Overwatch-like franchise system.

Play-ins for the remaining two spots in this weekend’s Pro League playoffs take place throughout Friday afternoon, with the bracket stage beginning on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Play continues on Sunday at the same time, with the grand finals slated to get underway sometime later that day. You can watch the entire tournament streaming on the Call of Duty Twitch Channel.

Outside of esports, the European Speedrunner Assembly will be kicking off its 2019 marathon on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. ET with an Any% run of Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64. Though not as well known as Summer Games Done Quick, at least on this continent, the weeklong event features plenty of talented speedrunners showcasing playthroughs in a wide range of games.

Some other runs to watch out for include Wario Land: Shake It! at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Catherine Classic at 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on Thursday at 3:51. The entire event will wrap up next Saturday at 6:00 a.m. with a playthrough of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Game Boy Advance.

And of course it’s all for a good cause, with donations from viewers going toward the Swedish Alzheimer’s Foundation. You can watch all of the speedruns on the ESA Marathon Twitch channel
